The BC Wildfire Service is preparing to conduct a larger-scale planned ignition on the Doctor Creek (N21257) wildfire to help support crews gain containment on the southeast perimeter of the fire. The ignition will begin today (Sept. 4, 2020), as early as 12 p.m. Mountain Time (MT) and will tie into the smaller-scale ignition that was successfully completed yesterday afternoon (Sept. 3, 2020). British Columbia has been grateful to host 215 South African firefighters over the past two weeks. This morning, as they prepared to depart for days of rest, they gifted local crews and staff members with a moving ceremony of song and dance to uplift spirits. Video from BC Wildfire Service shows two Parattack crews and one leader deployed to the east flank of the Old Man Lake wildfire in Sooke. 🪂 Parattack crews, also known as "smokejumpers," are specially trained to parachute from fixed-wing aircraft to access wildfires in remote or hard-to-reach areas.
