Today we remember a rescue that became the greatest loss of crew from a single rescue effort in the RNLI's history. It serves as a stark reminder of the selflessness of our crews that remains to this day. | RNLI

Today marks the 249th birthday of Sir William Hillary, the founder of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. In 1823 Sir William made an impassioned appeal to the nation, calling for a service dedicated to saving lives at sea, and in 1824 the RNLI was founded. | RNLI

Our crews saved 108 lives in the English Channel in 2022. Although mass casualty events are thankfully a small part of our lifesaving work, we've been innovating to save lives if they do happen. These inflatable sea stairs will help our crews recover large numbers of people from the water quickly and could be the difference between life and death. Head of Lifeboats Simon Ling tells us: ‘This is a game changing piece of lifesaving equipment.' The stairs, alongside other innovations, also support

We're always innovating at the RNLI and in this week in 1971, we demonstrated the prototype of the brand new Arun class lifeboat. The new lifeboat achieved a speed of 18 knots and was self-righting, and in 1982 it won a Design Council award for excellence. | RNLI

On this day in 1914 during the First World War, one of the biggest RNLI rescues in history took place. Six lifeboats launched to Rohilla, a sinking hospital ship. Incredibly, one of the five nurses saved, Mrs. K. M. Roberts, had also been rescued from the Titanic just two years earlier. One of the letters that she wrote to her husband whilst aboard the Titanic is held in RNLI archives to this day. | RNLI

Breaking waves crash over Cullercoats RNLI as they practise 'veering down'. This is when the lifeboat uses its anchor and engines to reverse towards a cliff or beach when the sea is too rough for the boat to go in forwards. It allows the crew to get into shallow areas while still keeping the lifeboat safely head-to-sea. | RNLI
