We used those old maple leaves for a rough sense of scale, letting us estimate that it's bigger than a grey squirrel but smaller than a house cat. The polecat is member of the mustelid family, which includes the stoat, badger and otter, and is roughly the size of a ferret - its domesticated cousin. Until recently polecats were on the brink of extinction caused by persecution. However, the good news is they have been undergoing a recovery and can be found in rural Wales and parts of England.
