On December 15, 1935, the Tower Bridge opened linking West Sacramento with the Sacramento’s Downtown at M Street (today’s Capitol Avenue). The Tower Bridge replaced an old steel swing-span bridge built by the Sacramento Northern Railway in 1910, known simply as the M Street Bridge. Construction of the Tower Bridge by the Department of Public Works began in July 1934 and cost $994,000, which was $294,000 over the projected budget. Over 1,500 people were employed during its construction in a time
