“Better a live donkey than a dead lion” The words of explorer Ernest Shackleton on why he turned back just 100 miles from the South Pole in 1909. Now, artefacts from that mission will stay in the UK, thanks to the National Heritage Memorial Fund. Today marks the 100th anniversary of Ernest Shackleton’s death. The Met Office worked with Shackleton in preparation for his last voyage. His ship, the Quest, was designated an official Weather Observation vessel and his weather observation instruments were loaned to him by the Met Office and the records that he took form part of our valuable archive.
