🌀 20 Years Since Katrina’s Deadly Warning 🌀 On this day in 2005, the National Weather Service in New Orleans issued one of the most chilling bulletins in U.S. history. It opened with the words “Devastating damage expected” and warned the Gulf Coast would be left uninhabitable for weeks, perhaps longer. Within 24 hours, Hurricane Katrina struck. More than 1,800 lives were lost. Entire neighborhoods were destroyed. The storm surge and wind damage reshaped New Orleans and the Gulf Coast forever.
