I'm out by a day, but 116 years ago yesterday the much loved English comedienne, monologist and actress, Joyce Grenfell, was born Joyce Irene Phipps in London into a well-to-do Anglo-American family. Her aunt was Nancy Astor, the first woman to take a seat as a Member of Parliament in the British House of Commons, and she was second cousin to the renowned American monologist Ruth Draper, whose style influenced her own work in solo performances and character sketches.
