The Solar Ultraviolet Imager (SUVI) onboard NOAA's GOES East (GOES-19) satellite captured this coronal mass ejection (CME) on August 5. According to the NWS Space Weather Prediction Center, combined effects from the CME and a coronal hole high speed stream are expected to cause geomagnetic storms on August 8–9. NOAA's SWFO-L1 satellite, scheduled to launch this fall, will improve our ability to monitor and predict this kind of solar activity and space weather, which can severely impact the natio

The Solar Ultraviolet Imager (SUVI) on the GOES East satellite captured an impressive eruption on Monday. Emanating from the top of the Sun the flare is unlikely to impact Earth. Learn more about Space Weather from NOAA at https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/ | CIMSS

The Solar Ultraviolet Imager (SUVI) instrument onboard NOAA's GOES East (GOES-19) satellite is monitoring a large coronal hole (dark area) on the sun. Solar wind/charged particles escape from these cooler areas on the sun's surface at higher speeds, which can lead to increased geomagnetic activity on Earth. The Solar Ultraviolet Imager (SUVI) on GOES East captured a strong solar flare on the Sun today. According to NOAA Space Weather, SUVI measured an X3.3 flare that peaked at 7:14 am CST (1314 UTC) as seen in this animation of FE 131 images, every 4 minutes from 1302 to 1514 UTC. Most of North America was not in sunlight when this occurred, but South America and Africa likely experienced degradation in High Frequency (HF) Radio communications due to the flare. | CIMSS

On Dec. 17, the Solar Ultraviolet Imager (#SUVI) onboard @NOAA's GOES East satellite spied a couple of plasma eruptions from the surface of the sun. They were not directed toward Earth. The Solar Ultraviolet Imager (SUVI) onboard NOAA's GOES East satellite has been watching a very stormy sun this week. At least five coronal mass ejections (CMEs) have been observed by the NOAA NWS Space Weather Prediction Center and a severe geomagnetic storm is likely to impact the Earth this weekend. It’s #TimelapseTuesday! This 24-hour imagery from the Solar Ultraviolet Imager (#SUVI) onboard @NOAA's #GOESEast 🛰️ shows the #SolarFilament eruption that brought the aurora to the northern U.S. last night rippling off the face of the sun on Sept. 16. It's still eclipse season for the GOES satellites, spot the dark "flash" of the satellite passing into the Earth's shadow. | NOAA Satellite and Information Service

GOES East captured a small solar flare via the Solar Ultraviolet Imager today. You can access these high resolution SUVI images via the UW-Madison Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) Data Center at https://ssec.wisc.edu/data/geo/. Simply choose SUVI GOES-16 or SUVI GOES-18 from the top drop down menu. | CIMSS

Our stormy sun released two spectacular solar prominences on August 20, 2025, and the Solar Ultraviolet Imager (SUVI) onboard NOAA's GOES West (GOES-19) satellite caught the eruptions. With the upcoming launch of NOAA's SWFO-L1 satellite, we’ll gain even more insight into these events to support the Space Weather Prediction Center's space weather forecasts. https://www.nesdis.noaa.gov/swfo-l1 | NOAA Satellite and Information Service
