On April 9, 1964 as the cry “Fire!” echoed throughout the halls of the Duke school, this small community in southwest Oklahoma was faced with reconstructing the entire facility.

Situated on the line of Altus, Roswell and El Paso Railway, 15 miles west of Altus, Duke was platted Sept 28, 1906 and moved to the present location in 1910. It was named for Judge Duke, who was then judge at Mangum. The population was about 600.

In September of 1890, Duke was officially “put on the map” when Mr. Perry applied for and was granted a Post Office. He became its first Postmaster and held the job for 18 years. The Perry’s, wealthier than most, lived in the two-story house by the Methodist Church (behind us).
