Voters will head to the polls on Tuesday, Aug. 5, across Metro Detroit and Michigan. Mayoral primary elections are being contested in cities like Detroit, Pontiac, Taylor, Dearborn Heights and Hamtramck. Voters will also cast ballots in council and commission elections, as well as municipal and school district proposals.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer met with President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday to discuss the toll tariffs are taking on the auto industry and the potential effects of his tax and spending bill on Medicaid.

Gov. Whitmer has received both praise and criticism for taking a more collaborative approach during Republican President Donald Trump's second term.

So far in 2025, 52 people have drowned in the Great Lakes, said Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project executive director Dave Benjamin. Of these drownings, 23 were in Lake Michigan. Since 2010, 1,386 people have drowned in the Great Lakes, and in 2024, 94 people died, the group said.

The Emmet County Dive Team responded to the scene and recovered the body of the teenager in the area he was last seen swimming. Sturgeon Bay is along the shore of Lake Michigan. The dive team reported there was a strong northeast current that was pulling the rescuers as they began search efforts.

Family is remembering 15-year-old Shaylani Williams, who died in an accidental drowning in Lake Michigan last week.
