The 11 people who had direct contact with the animals at Hess-Hathaway Park will be monitored by the Oakland County Health Division for 10 days. One person who has flu-like symptoms was tested for the highly pathogenic avian influenza. Results from the state lab are pending.

Following confirmation of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), commonly known as bird flu, more than 100 chickens, geese, ducks and other birds at a farm in Waterford Township were culled. The birds at Hess-Hathaway Park tested positive last week according to the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Urban Development (MDARD),

The Wayne County case involves a backyard poultry flock, the press release said. That case was confirmed after an investigation by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Michigan State University Veterinary Diagnostic Library.

For the first time, birds in a Wayne County backyard flock have been sickened by the highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza virus, MDARD reported.

In addition to the isolation measures, birds were killed to prevent the highly-contagious virus from spreading, officials said.

State officials said they've discovered the first case of the highly infectious H5N1 bird flu virus in a backyard flock in Wayne County. In a press release issued Thursday, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development did not specify how many birds were infected, what species was involved or in which community they were located.

YOLO COUNTY, Calif. — Yolo County confirmed Thursday the first detection of bird flu in a backyard poultry flock. The county says while bird flu has been detected in wild birds in the county since 2022, this marks the first time it’s been found in poultry.

The Connecticut Department of Agriculture says bird flu has been found in a backyard flock in New Haven County.
