California voters approve new US House map

Californians are voting on a ballot initiative, "Proposition 50," to determine if the state will adopt a new congressional map that redraws five districts to be more Democratic-leaning, potentially allowing Democrats to flip them in the midterms.
California’s Proposition 50 redistricting initiative turned Republican Rep. Ken Calvert’s narrowly GOP-leaning district a deep shade of blue on Tuesday, but on Wednesday he said he would just run in 2026 in an adjoining GOP-dominated district that the initiative made even redder.
California voters have passed Proposition 50 by a comfortable margin, codifying a freshly-gerrymandered congressional map for the rest of the decade. The passage of this new map — which is designed to protect a slew of vulnerable Democrats and will cost Republicans three to five seats in 2026 — is the most consequential development to date in the mid-decade redistricting wars due to the sheer number of seats that it impacts.
The California Republican Party announced a federal lawsuit aimed at blocking the state's new House maps after the passage of Prop. 50.
