A federal district court judge in Kentucky has struck down President Joe Biden’s effort to protect transgender students and make other changes to Title IX, ruling the U.S. Department of Education violated teachers’ rights by requiring them to use transgender students’ names and pronouns.
The Biden rule, which makes ‘gender identity’ a protected class similar to sex, ‘turns Title IX on its head,’ the judge wrote.
The decision threw out the administration’s proposed regulations, which prohibited discrimination based on gender identity.
A federal judge struck down the rule just days before Donald J. Trump, who promised to unwind much of it, assumes the presidency.
The court’s decision to strike down the rule is being hailed as a major victory by opponents of the regulation.
