Dare County officials have issued a mandatory evacuation of Zone A of Hatteras Island due to the potential for life-threatening impacts from Hurricane Erin, with coastal flooding and ocean overwash expected to begin on August 19th and continue through August 21st.
Lifeguards at the popular summer destination made 144 rescues over six days, the New Hampshire State Beach Patrol said. There were 51 rescues on Aug. 12 alone. "All patrons were rescued safely without any further medical attention needed," Patrol Chief Patrick Murphy told WBZ-TV.

Rehoboth Beach Patrol lifeguards were flying red flags, which indicate "high hazard," but ocean access was not closed Aug. 18. In Bethany Beach, flags also indicated high hazard, and "dangerous surf" was noted on the town's "Safe Swim" website.
