The West Coast was under a tsunami advisory following a magnitude 8.8 earthquake off the coast of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula.

A tsunami watch for the West Coast to the border was elevated Tuesday evening to a tsunami advisory by the National Weather Service.

An 8.8 magnitude earthquake that struck near Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula has placed all of the West Coast under a tsunami advisory, with waves expected to reach the California coast around 1 a.m.

Large waves could start lapping at some parts of the Oregon Coast and Washington as early as 11:30 p.m. The Oregon-California border is at elevated risk.
