United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio has extended an invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on behalf of US President Donald Trump to visit the White House in the near future, according to US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor who shared the development on social media platform X.
The US Secretary of State will be in India for his first trip to the South Asian country from May 23 to 26, 2026. He will discuss energy security, trade, and defence cooperation during meetings with senior Indian officials.
After the roller coaster of the past 12 months, the US and India looked to steady the relationship with secretary of state Marco Rubio calling on PM Narendra Modi on Saturday and delivering an invitation from President Donald Trump to visit the US “in the near future”.
The US Secretary of State reached Kolkata this morning and visited the Missionaries of Charity in the city before heading to the national capital.
"The India-US relationship is at the cornerstone of Washington’s approach to the Indo-Pacific," US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said.
Marco Rubio on Saturday invited Indian PM Narendra Modi to Washington, calling the two countries' relationship vitally important despite recent friction.
