President Donald Trump’s special envoy has arrived in Israel to address the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff was expected to arrive in Israel in a bid to salvage Gaza ceasefire talks and tackle a humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian enclave, where a global hunger monitor has warned that famine was unfolding.

It will be the first known visit in months for Steve Witkoff, President Trump’s lead on the cease-fire and hostage talks. Since his last trip, conditions in the enclave have worsened.

The Senate rejected an effort Wednesday from Sen. Bernie Sanders to block the sale of U.S. bombs and firearms to Israel, though the vote showed a growing number of Democrats opposed to the arms sales amid widespread hunger and suffering in Gaza.

Shaheen said in a statement that Israel has a right to defend its citizens, but added: "it is clear that the Government of Israel has not conducted its military operations in Gaza

The U.S. Senate has approved weapons sales to Israel, despite the fact that a majority of Senate Democrats voted against the measure.
