Israeli troops opened fire in south Lebanon on Sunday, killing 10 residents and a Lebanese soldier, health officials said as hundreds of people tried to return to their homes on the deadline for Israel to withdraw.

The Israeli military will not complete its withdrawal from southern Lebanon within the 60-day period set out in the ceasefire deal that ended its war with Hezbollah, the Israeli prime minister's office said Friday.

Lebanon said 15 people were killed on Sunday in confrontations with Israeli forces in the south of the country. The deaths came after a deadline expired for Israeli troops to withdraw from southern Lebanon as part of a ceasefire deal between Israel and the Iranian-allied Lebanese Hezbollah movement.
