CBS News New York got a rare look inside the East River Tunnels before Amtrak's $1.6 billion project to repair Superstorm Sandy damage begins.

To illustrate the major repairs needed in one of Amtrak’s East River tunnels, a top railroad official needed to only brush his hands along a piece of metal.

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) -- Amtrak is about to begin massive repairs on two of the four East River train tunnels that were heavily damaged by Superstorm Sandy 12 years ago. It's a one-at-a-time process that will take 3 years. The worry is the delays on the Long Island Rail Road.
